Welcome Back to School Everyone!

September has arrived and the staff and students of St. Gerard are getting back to work. I hope everyone had a relaxing and wonderful summer break.
Our annual welcome BBQ is being held on Thursday September 14th, BBQ order forms have gone home with your child.

Our first fundraiser is underway. Some of our students are selling show and save coupon books, to help raise money for our school. Please do your best to sell a book or two. Half of the proceeds from the sale go directly to the school.

The grade 8 class is hoping to start work on the yearbook soon. In order to make it possible we need to pre-sell a least 30 yearbooks by November 1st.

ELA – The grade 8 class has begun the first novel of the year. They are listening to the novel “A long way from Chicago” by Richard Peck and keeping a listening journal.
We have started our spelling and grammar programs. Students should be coming home with a bit of work in these subjects.

Social Studies – We have begun the year with a mini unit about developing Worldviews.

French – Our first unit deals with fast food and ordering in restaurants.

Let’s all work to make this year a wonderful experience for all of us at St. Gerard School.

Happy Easter everyone!

We are looking forward to celebrating Easter this spring. The students and staff of St. Gerard are gathering in the gym on Thursday for out annual Holy Thursday ceremony. It is a wonderful experience which we can share as we prepare for the resurrection of Jesus.

The grade eight class has begun their novel study of the Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is a wonderfully adventurous story which I hope we will all enjoy immensely.

Ask your child to tell you about what they are reading.

We are currently finishing our typing and editing our own Choose Your Own Adventure short stories. They are due on Thursday April 13th. They promise to be very interesting and exciting to read and explore.

In French we are learning about legends and natural phenomena, while picking up skills using past tense. Feel free to ask your child about how the bear lost its tail, or the legend of maple syrup.

We are currently exploring the city states, arts, culture, and contributions of the Ancient Greeks in social studies.

Permission forms for this year's Catholic School Spirit Day will be coming home this week. This year we will be joining other grade 7 and 8 students at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish for a day of entertainment and spiritual development. Looking forward to a wonderful day.

Welcome back to school

September is in full swing and the grade 8 class is getting back to work after a nice, long summer of fun and relaxation.

The grade 8 class is currently working on the novel Holes by Louis Sachar in ELA. They are listening to the book and keeping a listening response journal. We will also be starting are T.U.S.C. program in the few weeks. In T.U.S.C. the students prepare and present weekly presentations on a variety of topics. This should be a fun and exciting learning experience.

In French we are starting our year with a unit about fast food. Students will learn about food choices as well as ordering and serving food in the context of fast food restaurants.

We are about to begin our first full unit of study in social studies by exploring our earliest human ancestors. This should be a very interesting and informative unit.

St. Gerard School’s annual Toonies for Todd: Run for the Cure is taking place this Friday, September 22nd and promises to be a thrilling way to get some exercise and raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Permissions slips have gone home and should be coming back as soon as possible.

Picture day is nearly upon us. Students will be sitting for their portraits on Tuesday, September 27th so be sure to do your hair and put on your best smile.

A reminder that we are hoping to sell 30 yearbooks before November 1st. Without those 30 orders, we will be unable to produce a yearbook this year, so if you are planning to buy a yearbook please get those orders in by the beginning of November. Order forms can be found in our monthly newsletter.

Here’s to another wonderful school year at St. Gerard School.

One hundred days of school have come and gone. Time flies really quickly when you are as busy as we have been in grade 8. Catholic Schools Week was a fun break from the February cold. We had a great time at bingo, and our family lunch was once again a wonderful afternoon of mingling and sharing a meal with our extended school family.

The grade 7 and 8 classes are attending winter camp in Winkler next week, from February 24th to the 26th. We are looking forward to some fine weather, fun activities and a chance to bond and share an exciting experience together.

A reminder to the grade 8 class that their novel study, "Freak the Mighty" is going to be due on February 29th. Make sure you have all of your activities and assignments finished.

A reminder to parents that term two reports are going out March 3rd. Parent teacher conference request forms will be included with the report. We will only be requesting a conference if we feel there is a need, however feel free to ask for an appointment should you feel you would like to meet with us.

Our last day before Christmas Break is Friday, December 18th. It will be an early dismissal day, and there will be no after school program.

Classes resume on January 4th. I hope everyone has an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate before returning to school in the new year.

Grade 7 and 8 exams start the week of January 18th until the 22nd. Exam review outlines have gone home already, so students should do a little review over the Christmas Break.
